Your Family’s Future: Beyond the 401k & College Fund

Welcome to your weekend briefing. This week, we're ditching outdated financial advice and exploring what 'wealth' means in the age of AI.

Why Your Playbook for Success Is Broken

For generations, the path to prosperity for families in Kansas City and Johnson County has been clear: get a good education, secure a stable job, and diligently invest in a 401k and college savings plan. That playbook is now fundamentally broken. In a world rapidly being reshaped by artificial intelligence, the very definitions of value, career, and wealth are being rewritten. As outlined in the "Solve Everything" framework, traditional economic indicators like GDP are becoming obsolete, unable to measure the explosive gains in human welfare when AI can solve complex problems for pennies on the dollar. Preparing your children for the future now requires a radical shift in thinking, moving away from accumulating financial capital and toward building human capability.

The Three Futures: Where We're Headed

To understand the urgency, we must look at the projected timeline of our AI-driven future. The Solve Everything manifesto outlines three distinct phases. We are currently in the 2026 Lock-In, a critical period where foundational decisions about AI infrastructure, data rights, and technical standards are hardening into long-term realities. This is happening within the "Foundry Window"—a pivotal 18-month timeframe where the die is cast for the next century.

Next comes the 2030 Liquefaction, a phase where the physical world becomes programmable and services we now consider complex, like "Normal Liver Function," could become subscription-based utilities. This culminates in the 2035 Quiet Hum, a vision of a "Solved World" where basic necessities are delivered with the reliability of electricity and humanity may achieve longevity escape velocity. The choices we make as a society and as families right now, during this Lock-In period, will determine which version of that future we inherit.

The New Family Balance Sheet: RoCS and the Compute Wallet

If the 401k is obsolete, what replaces it? The new framework revolves around two key concepts: Return on Cognitive Spend (RoCS) and the Compute Wallet. As detailed in Redefining Value, RoCS is the critical metric of the future, measuring the value of output per unit of compute and energy consumed. For your family, this means evaluating activities based on their Learning Gain per Hour (LG/H). Is that weekend soccer tournament building adaptable skills, or is it just a habit?

Your child's most valuable future asset won't be a trust fund; it will be their Compute Wallet. This is a conceptual and, eventually, literal allocation of computational resources that grants them agency in an AI-powered world. Instead of inheriting money, they will inherit the capacity to direct AI to solve problems, create art, and build new systems. The focus of parenting shifts from saving dollars to curating a portfolio of skills, experiences, and data that will fill this wallet.

The New Social Contract: Universal Basic Capability

The societal safety net must also evolve. Instead of simply providing cash through Universal Basic Income (UBI), the future social contract proposes Universal Basic Capability (UBC). This model, outlined in Redefining Value, guarantees every citizen access to a baseline of 'solved' services—an AI doctor, an AI tutor, AI-driven legal advice. It's a shift from ensuring survival to guaranteeing potential. This is a world where national progress is measured not by GDP, but by an Abundance Capability Index that tracks the population's access to high-quality, AI-delivered services.

Of course, this vision of a seamlessly solved future is the goal, assuming no major unforeseen black swan events along the way. But the trajectory is clear: the value of human labor will plummet, while the value of human purpose and direction will skyrocket.

What's Next: Your Family's Weekend Homework

This transition can feel abstract, but you can begin shifting your family's mindset this weekend with a few simple exercises.

1. Audit Your Weekend 'RoCS': At dinner tonight, have a family discussion. Make a list of your typical weekend activities—sports, music lessons, coding clubs, video games. Discuss which ones have the highest Learning Gain per Hour (LG/H). Which activities are teaching adaptable problem-solving, and which are just fulfilling a routine? The goal isn't to quit everything, but to become conscious of the cognitive return on your family's time.

2. Become an 'Explorer of Purpose': Give your children a small, open-ended challenge. For example: "Design the perfect park for our neighborhood." Instead of telling them how, instruct them to use AI tools (like ChatGPT for ideas or Midjourney for visuals) to define the goal and explore possibilities. The exercise is about framing the 'what' and letting the machine handle the 'how'.

3. Start a 'Compute Wallet' Dialogue: Introduce the idea of a 'Compute Wallet' as a place to store skills, not money. Ask your kids: If you had a wallet for capabilities, what would be the most valuable things to put in it? This conversation helps re-orient their thinking from earning money to building capability.

Q: What is the 'Foundry Window'?

A: The 'Foundry Window' is a critical 18-month period, which is happening now, where the technical standards, data rights, and supply chains for the AI age are being established. According to the Solve Everything framework, the decisions made during this window will 'harden' and set the path for technology and society for decades.

Q: How is 'Universal Basic Capability' (UBC) different from UBI?

A: Universal Basic Income (UBI) provides citizens with a cash stipend. Universal Basic Capability (UBC), by contrast, guarantees access to essential, high-quality services delivered by AI, such as personalized healthcare and education. The focus is on ensuring a baseline of human potential and capability, not just financial survival. This concept is detailed in Redefining Value.

Q: What does 'Return on Cognitive Spend' (RoCS) actually measure?

A: RoCS is a metric designed for the AI economy that measures the value of output generated per unit of compute and electricity consumed. For individuals and families, it's a way to think about the efficiency of turning thought, learning, and AI-assisted work into tangible results, as explained in Redefining Value.

Q: What is an 'Explorer of Purpose'?

A: In an AI-driven world where machines perform most tasks, the key human role shifts to that of an 'Explorer of Purpose'. This person's job is not to do the work, but to set the goals, values, and 'North Star' for AI systems to optimize toward. It emphasizes human creativity, ethics, and strategic direction over manual or analytical labor, a concept from Shaping the AI Age.
