Final: Algeria 3, Austria 3
Algeria and Austria drew 3-3 in the final round of Group J at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday, June 27, 2026 — Kansas City’s last World Cup group-stage match. It was level 1-1 at halftime and stayed tense to the final whistle, with the deciding goals coming deep into stoppage time.
How the goals went in
Marko Arnautovic put Austria ahead in the 28th minute. Algeria drew level right before the break, Rafik Belghali finishing in the 45th minute to make it 1-1 at halftime.
Marcel Sabitzer restored Austria’s lead in the 55th minute (2-1), but Riyad Mahrez answered in the 60th to level it again at 2-2.
Then came the finish. Mahrez struck again in the 90+3′ minute to put Algeria ahead 3-2 in stoppage time — only for Sasa Kalajdzic to head home an Austria equalizer in the 90+6′ minute to make it 3-3 at the death.
What it means
Both teams advanced. Algeria and Austria each finished Group J with identical records (one win, one draw, one loss — 4 points), and the draw was enough to carry both into the knockout round while eliminating Iran.
In the Round of 32, Austria face Spain and Algeria meet Switzerland, per the official tournament bracket.
KC’s World Cup now turns to the knockouts
Saturday’s thriller was the last group-stage match at Arrowhead — Kansas City hosted six World Cup matches across the group stage. The city’s tournament isn’t over, though: KC’s next match is a Round of 32 knockout game on Thursday, July 3, when Colombia face Ghana at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
