How the USA got here
The United States won Group D and beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in the Round of 32 to reach the knockout stage. Captain Christian Pulisic played 88 minutes in that match after shaking off a calf issue, and the U.S. has scored at least twice in every game of the tournament so far under head coach Mauricio Pochettino.
The biggest late twist: striker Folarin Balogun, sent off against Bosnia, is cleared to play after FIFA took the rare step of lifting his automatic one-game suspension. Here's how that reversal happened — and why Belgium is furious about it.
Belgium: dangerous, if not at their best
Belgium topped Group G with five points (a win and two draws), then rallied to beat Senegal 3-2 in the Round of 32 after falling behind. They have not looked their sharpest this tournament, but few sides carry more match-winning talent: Kevin De Bruyne — at 34, in what is likely his last World Cup — plus striker Romelu Lukaku, Manchester City winger Jérémy Doku, and Real Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois. In a single-elimination match, any one of them can decide it.
What's on the line
A win sends the United States to the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2002. There is extra needle, too: after FIFA reversed Balogun's suspension, Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia sarcastically called the decision "April Fools," and the Belgian federation said it was exploring its options. Tonight, both teams settle it on the field.
