The three suspects, identified as Chilean citizens Ignacio Zuniga Cartes, Bastian Jimenez Freraut, and Pablo Zuniga Cartes, are purported members of a South American theft group. According to an ABC News report, two of the suspects were apprehended in Argentina following a separate robbery at the home of tennis player Juan Martin del Potro earlier this month. The third arrest followed shortly after. This international coordination signals a critical step toward bringing the perpetrators to justice.

These arrests are part of a much larger federal case. The three men are among seven defendants charged in a February 2025 federal complaint with conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property. The group is accused of stealing more than $2 million in valuables, including jewelry, cash, and luxury items, from athletes across the country. According to a KMBC report, the ring also targeted other high-profile players like Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow.

The thieves operated with a clear methodology, often targeting athletes while they were playing in games or traveling with their teams. Federal court documents indicate the suspects meticulously researched their targets, reviewing social media profiles to assess security and identify opportunities. The focus now shifts to the legal process. The arrested men are reportedly back in Chile awaiting possible extradition to the United States to face federal charges. U.S. authorities had already filed arrest warrants with a view to extradition, according to a KCTV5 report. "These individuals will face justice in the United States or Argentina," Commissioner Enrique Gutierrez of Chilean Interpol stated.

Meanwhile, the broader case continues to move forward in the U.S. Another suspect in the conspiracy, Alexander Esteban Huaiquil-Chavez, pleaded guilty in March 2026 and is scheduled for sentencing on June 11.
