FBI Posts $25K Reward for KC Highway Shooter Suspect

Kansas City is grappling with a heightened public safety alert as the manhunt for a suspected highway shooter continues. Late last week, the FBI announced a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of 22-year-old Oscar Sanchez-Munoz. He is the primary suspect in a violent shooting spree on Tuesday, June 16, that terrorized motorists along major city arteries, leaving one person dead and four others injured. Authorities have described Sanchez-Munoz as "armed and dangerous" and are urging residents to remain vigilant.

The string of attacks on June 16 unfolded in a rapid 30-minute window during the evening commute. The violence began on Interstate 670 near Wyoming Street, with subsequent shootings reported on Interstate 70 near The Paseo and Prospect Avenue, and on Truman Road near Hardesty Avenue. The spree culminated in the death of 43-year-old Jeremy Keenan, who was fatally shot in his truck near Truman Road and Bennington Avenue, causing him to crash. One of the victims shot near Prospect Avenue was an Uber driver transporting two fans to Arrowhead Stadium for a 2026 FIFA World Cup match. Investigators have also linked Sanchez-Munoz to a separate shooting in Wyandotte County, Kansas, that occurred five days prior, on June 11, where a gunman fired into a vehicle carrying an adult and a child.

The search for Sanchez-Munoz has involved multiple intensive police operations. Following the Tuesday shootings, investigators traced the suspect to a residence in Independence, Missouri, resulting in an overnight standoff. However, Sanchez-Munoz was not found at the scene, though a fire broke out that caused significant damage to the home. A second standoff occurred at another Kansas City home on June 17 based on a tip, but that also concluded without locating the suspect. As of this weekend, Oscar Sanchez-Munoz remains at large, and law enforcement agencies are relying heavily on public assistance to determine his whereabouts.

The manhunt remains the top priority for local and federal law enforcement in Kansas City. The shootings have shaken the community, occurring on highways that are central to the daily lives of thousands of commuters. While Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves stated there is no broader connection between the shootings and the FIFA World Cup events, the incident has cast a shadow over the city during a time of international focus.
